James Kouzes e Barry Posner abordam, neste livro, cinco práticas que definem uma liderança exemplar, sendo elas:
1) Liderar dando o exemplo: “Titles are granted, but it’s your behavior that wins you respect. If you want to gain commitment and achieve the highest standards, you must be a model of the behavior that you expect of others.” (p. 12);
2) Inspirar uma visão partilhada: “Leaders envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities.” (p. 13);
3) Desafiar o processo: “While ‘luck’ or ‘being in the right place at the right time’ may play a role in the specific opportunities leaders embrace, those who lead others to greatness seek and accept challenge.” (p. 14);
4) Permitir que outros atuem: “Grand dreams do not become significant realities through the actions of a single leader. Leadership is a team effort. (…) Exemplary leaders (…) foster collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships.” (p. 15);
5) Encorajar o coração: “People become exhausted, frustrated, and disenchanted. (…) It’s part of the leader’s job to recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence.” (p. 16).
