Abstract:
English private tutoring is a pervasive phenomenon around the globe, regardless of countries development level, cultural differences and politics. This chapter focuses on the nature, intensity and effectiveness of English private tutoring in Brazil. As a clear example of globalization, which is not orchestrated by any specific force but shaped by a complex array of variables and trends, the private supplementary tutoring landscape is increasingly attracting researchers’ attention. The focus of this chapter is located in Latin America, specifically the broad and diverse scenario of Brazil, based on a literature review. We highlight overlaps and specificities of English private tutoring in Brazil when compared with other regions of the world. The results and conclusions of this chapter may be used for research purposes and have the potential to influence educational policy on English language teaching and learning in Brazil, Latin America and elsewhere.
